Hotwire Reveals Hotel Rate Report for June 2011
Where hotel rates have dropped the most and the top five cities where rates have experienced the biggest price increases. While one report guides customers to the destinations that will maximize their travel dollars, the other highlights places where using Hotwire to save money is even more essential.Top Five Price Drops:
Travelers looking for great summer destinations where prices continue to fall are in luck. In the number one spot with an 11 percent drop, cities, Fort Meyers is dropping rates due to new hotel players offering deeper discounts than in previous seasons. Prices are 4 percent lower than the already low prices of 2010, so look to this great little city for access to awesome beaches and warm ocean currents without the huge crowds.
Syracuse saw another seven percent price drop this month as new inventory continues to become available. San Antonio jumps back on the list this month with a six percent decrease, where a slow start to summer demand is causing hotels to aggressively drop rates to attract business travelers. The Hotwire Hotel Rate Report will run results during the second week of each month. Results are calculated by looking at Hotwire stay dates for select regions in the current month, and comparing prices in the current month against Hotwire prices in the same month in the prior year. Prices are compared within the same star rating categories for consistency, and the percent change in price for each region is generated as an overall average of the changes in those categories. The prices in the charts above are examples for a particular star rating category within that market, and actual prices may be higher or lower than the example that is provided.

Ancient Rome, Colonial Williamsburg Influence, and Hotel History Talk
I hadn’t arrived in CW planning on asking any school related questions. But as I looked at the schedule for the day, it occurred to me that I might pose my dilemma to someone I always talk to at “The Actor’s Trunk”, an open ended Q&A opportunity about 18th century theater with the Playbooth Players. The kids and I need to do a history presentation on Ancient Rome, my kids want me to think of something great, and for the first time ever, I haven’t whipped out a plan of action. I have ideas floating around the back of my mind, but I can’t seem to grasp them well enough to make them happen. Perhaps I could get a little CW inspiration.
Who would be sitting outside the Mary Stith House but the actor whom I’m always questioning about theater. In fact, he gave me lots of great information on Greek theater for our last history presentation. He saw us coming and was about to usher us in when I told him that actually I wanted to pick his brain and he laughed. I thanked him for the help on Greece and explained that now I need help on Rome. He laughed and immediately discoursed on all things Roman, while I furiously tried to write notes in pace with his words. More than once I had to plead for him to let me catch up, at which point I summarized what I thought I understood and he resummarized clarifications for me.
Then I asked about “Cato,” which is an 18th century play CW is always referencing, which was a George Washington favorite and Patrick Henry was known for quoting him. Wasn’t Cato a contemporary of Julius Caesar? The actor gave a full discourse on Cato’s influence on 18th century gentleman, which inspired revolutionary thought. Once again I was furiously attempting to write complete notes.
One thing led to another and I told him about my feeble ideas that weren’t going anywhere. I told him that for each era of history, when I plan one of our history presentations, I try to use the theme of the era for the theme of our presentation. “If you want the theme of Ancient Rome…” he replied..and he gave me full discourse on ideas to consider on that, all grounded in the writings of the men of Ancient Rome…Livy, Cicero, Plutarch, etc, etc, etc. Hmmmm, didn’t my son and I have a similar conversation about this with Lafayette a couple of weeks ago…and Thomas Jefferson? In other words, CW is great about basing their scholarship on primary resource documentss…which is what all these interpreters have been encouraging us to do as well. I do have Plutarch in the bookcase, but to read the works of all the great men of Rome that Jefferson, Lafayette and this actor from the Playbooth Theater are recommending would culminate in hundreds of pages, thousands of pages, quite likely millions of pages! Where do I start? Where do I find the time?
