In 2010, the Wildcats battled inconsistency at quarterback yet were candidates for the postseason until a late-season arrest of quarterback Eugene Smith, who had already missed time with injuries, accelerated a downward slide and season-ending two-game losing streak.

Pittman isn’t the only one with an eye on some redemption in 2011 after an up-and-down 8-3 mark in 2010.

“We have 30 seniors,” Pittman said. “That means we’re going to have some leadership and it’s shown in summer (conditioning). They’re all working out.

“You can feel the excitement, you can feel the motivation of all the guys. They have high expectations. We lost the last two games of last season. We’re hungry.”

Richt favors eliminating kickoffs

Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano recently proposed that kickoffs be eliminated for safety reasons, and replaced with a fourth-and-15 on the 30. Richt, who like Schiano has had a player get seriously injured on a kickoff, said he would vote to just have the offense start at the 23, or whatever the average starting position was determined to be.

“We had a young man get hurt on that also, which ended his playing career. So I’m not all that excited about it,” said Richt, referring to Decory Bryant’s career-ending neck injury in 2003. “It is an exciting play. It’s probably gonna be a bigger story than it should be. I don’t think it’s gonna happen anytime soon, I don’t. It’d be a major, major rule change, no doubt.”

But Georgia linebacker Christian Robinson is fully against Schiano’s proposal.

“I think that would just take away a lot of plays that are game-changing. It’s a dangerous sport,” he said. “Excitement. The first play. Everybody wants kickoffs. You don’t just line up and play. That first kickoff when the crowd’s going wild. And if you eliminate that, you’re eliminating a part of the game.”

Freshman updates

Every signee that Georgia expected to be able to enroll this summer will do so, according to Richt.

The Bulldogs signed 26 players in February, and the vast majority of them -- including tailback Isaiah Crowell and junior college nose tackle John Jenkins -- are on campus and have enrolled. Several recruits from south Florida, Kent Turene and Ramik Wilson, are on a different high school calendar, which is why they haven’t arrived yet, according to Richt.
