Central Point man crushed by toppled trailer sues trucking company for $4.5 ...

A Central Point man whose pickup truck was crushed when a double-tractor trailer rolled on top of it last December is suing the trucking company and driver for $4.5 million.
 
William Geary, 60, was waiting at a red light to make a left turn on Biddle Road in Central Point on Dec. 21 when the double-tractor driven by Phillip McCulloch turned right onto the highway from Table Rock Road.

The second trailer tipped over onto Geary's truck. Geary filed suit Tuesday in Multnomah County Circuit Court.
 
At a news conference with his wife, Barbara, at his side, Geary described the crash and the 90 minutes he spent trapped beneath the trailer in his 2001 Chevrolet Silverado.
 
Geary, a former finance officer for a Ford dealer, reinvented himself several years ago, taking a job as the manager of the 4 Corners Market & Deli on Table Rock Road. He was just blocks from work when his life was irreversibly changed.
 
He said he saw the truck turning, and noticed the driver appeared to be going fast.
 
"I could see him leaning forward, looking in his side mirror, and then I saw the panic in the guy's face. It all happened in slow motion -- I didn't think it was going to fall on me. There was no escape. I could not breathe. My legs were crushed. I thought I was going to die."
 
Police tried to remove the trailer with a tow truck, but the load was too unstable, said Barbara McCormick, who came to the crash scene a short time afterward. A second tow truck was called in, but eventually a large forklift pulled Geary's pickup with him inside from under the trailer.
 
During the entire time, Geary was awake and conscious. His left knee and left wrist were crushed. His neck was broken. It was, he said, like a drowning man trying to keep his head above water.
 
And for 90 minutes, a Good Samaritan who was in a car nearby sat in the truck's back seat, holding Geary's head and neck in place. The man, whom Geary recognized as a Jehovah's Witness who used come to the Geary home, refused to leave him, telling police and firefighters that he would take the risk.
 
"He kept telling me that everything was going to be all right," Geary said.
 
Geary's attorney, Tom D'Amore, said the case was filed in Multnomah County because the defendant in the case, Express Transport Corp.

Reports the woman died Thursday from the injuries she sustained in the crash. The 83-year-old former council member remains hospitalized at Legacy Emanuel Medical Center in Portland.

Tuesday's car accident occurred around 3:15p.m. Emergency personnel were summoned at roughly 3:30 that afternoon of the Oregon car accident on northbound Highway 105. A 19-year-old woman is believed to have been driving a gray car on 5 . The man hit the brakes to avoid the gray car and came to a complete stop.

As the gray car cleared the intersection, a fully loaded logging truck slammed into the rear-end of the pickup truck. The impact propelled the pickup truck into the median along Highway 105. The gray car continued traveling southbound on 105.

Astoria Fire Department personnel had to extricate the couple from the pickup truck. The couple was originally taken to Columbia memorial Hospital in Astoria . The woman was transferred by helicopter to Portland, where she died Thursday. The former council member was transferred to Portland by ground ambulance for treatment. The trucker in the logging rig was not injured.
