Rahman, a new wave of music

A R Rahman is internationally known and admired by music lovers all over the world, particularly among the Indian diasporic communities.

Although he is in his forties now, he is still regarded as "the golden boy of Indian music", "the musical storm", "the new wave of music".

And Ms Kamini Mathai who has written extensively on Indian cinema called him Mozart of the East. Mozart (1756 - 1791) was respected in Europe as the greatest musician of the eighteenth century.

I am always thrilled by Rahman's music of those compositions where he uses folk rhythms whether it is chhayia chhayia from the film Dil Se or Jai Ho Jai Ho from Slumdog Millionaire.

The Sumdog Millionaire won eight Oscars, and one Oscar was given to Jai Ho Jai Ho. Rahman provided the music for it and Gulzar wrote the lyric:

Aaja Aaja jind shamiyanay ke tale

Aaja jariwale neelay aasman ke tale

Come on my life, come under the big canopy

Come, join me under the glittering blue sky

It was sung by Sukhwinder and others. When Rahman, Gulzar and Sukhwinder join together, the melodies produced by the combination, make some listeners ecstatic who begin to dance deliriously.

The producer of Slumdog Millionaire, Danny Boyle, said that he chose Rahman to give music to his film because he is able to create 'incredible fusion.'

Gulzar who provided lyrics to many of his compositions once remarked, " He is a milestone in Hindi film music and has single-handedly changed the sound of music in the movies."

Song writer and musical soundtrack coordinator of Hollywood, Mr Ron Fair, considers Rahman to be " one of the world's great living composer in any medium."

And an Australian film director and producer, Buz Luhrmann , gave his opinion in the following words, " I had come to the music of A R Rahman through the emotional and haunting score of the film Bombay and the wit and celebration of Lagaan.

But the more of Rahman's music I encountered, the more I was to be at the sheer diversity of styles: from swinging brass bands to triumph anthems; from joyous pop to west-end musicals.

Whatever the styles, A R Rahman's music always possesses a profound sense of humanity and spirit, the qualities that inspire me most."

He began his career from Tamil film, Roja which was dubbed into Hindi in 1994. Since then he has revolutionized music not only of Tamil but also of Hindi films.
