Michaels PIN Pad Crime Resurfaces: Money Stolen From Accounts

Michaels Stores Inc., a nationwide crafts retailer, says if you shopped at their stores between February 8th to May 6th 2011 your bank account information may have been stolen. This is because of tampered PIN pads. The threat has been removed, but the thieves are still using that information to steal money.

Monday, many of Ent Federal Credit Union customers showed up to say money had been stolen from their accounts.

Armed Forces Bank tells 11 News several accounts had been compromised as well.

Both banks say all the customers had one thing in common, they had shopped at Michaels from February to May.

Ent Federal Credit Union was calling customers to inform them about purchases made out-of-state. Most withdrawals were made in California.

"Somebody in California was trying to withdraw a hundred dollars from my account at the same time I was running around trying to buy batteries here in Colorado Springs. That's how they found it, you can't be in two places at one time," said Edgar Johnson.

Johnson says he did shop at Michael's within the last month. He was called by Ent Federal Credit Union and told there was suspicious activity with his bank account. He went in on Monday to replace his debit card.

"They checked my account to find out what had been taken out and we went over my accounts and everything was fine. Apparently, the bank had taken care of it and can celled the card so they didn't get the $100," said Johnson.

He adds, "It's extremely scary when somebody can get into your account when they haven't even touched your card and you haven't handed it to anybody."

Somebody in California tried to take around $700 from Cody Alexander on Saturday. His wife received a call from the bank and they were able to catch it before it affected their bank account. Alexander went in on Monday to replace his card. But he says not everyone got as lucky as he did.

"Saturday one of my buddies gave me a call and said that they had actually taken $3,000 off of him from California. The bank didn't catch it in time and now he is out that money," said Alexander.

Jennifer Carson was trying to make a purchase with her debit card on Sunday when it was denied. She says she knew there was money in there. After being denied a second time she called the bank and found that her account was put on hold because of two suspicious purchases. Both were $500 purchases, one in California the other in Denver.
