Local MahJongg Enthusiasts Play in Bristol, Tiverton

Each week a group of people throughout the region gather in the playroom in Sakonnet Bay Manor and every first Friday of the month they meet at Blithewold Mansion. Like clockwork, people gather to spend the afternoon very committed to what brought them together: the Chinese Mahjongg game.

Mahjongg is a complex but simple. It is played with small rectangular tiles marked with different symbols distinguishing.As the famous American game of Scrabble, the tiles of a person are placed on a grid, that has all the tiles on their own, like a hand of cards while hiding their "hand" of other players.

Each participant also has a card in front of them with hands playable this year, which is necessary because it is updated annually by the National League of Mahjongg (NMJL).

Usually played with four people at a table, participants take turns in a circle, discarding a tile each turn as they attempt to form the one hand detailed map with their tiles.Lay the tiles can be claimed by other participants.

Mahjongg, which roughly translates to "Sparrow", is native to China, where it is still a popular form of play immesely. The game was introduced in the United States in 1920. In 1937, the National League MahJongg was founded to fight against the wide variety of versions and traffic regulations in the country. The current rules, as mandated by the NMJL, differ slightly from the version played in China.

What began as four friends (Gretchen Mersey, Pat Medeiros, Pam and Karen Gabriel Cyr) meet weekly or play, has gradually evolved into a weekly event in the presence of people throughout the region. The group has increased to give lessons in Tiverton Essex Public Library.

Interest gradually increased, and the increasing number of players led the group to move their games to the homes of people Tiverton Senior Center.When the group again in its current headquarters of Sakonnet Bay Manor, they nicknamed Dragon Flowers, referencing the different types of tiles used in the game.

While the game is competitive, there is a palpable sense of community among group members. There is a pot where members make minor contributions to which are used to pay any material needs of the group (such as card tables). Participants are called tags, helping to get them acclimated to people they probably would not have met otherwise.
