Shrubs. How wonderful they are. You know you’re getting older when you start taking shrubs seriously. For ease in the garden, nothing beats a nicely-formed bush that fills up space and crowds out weeds. Once the knees start to creak, who needs those fiddly perennials? Bring on the bushy boys instead.
But why do so many people opt for boring shrubs? Wishy-washy evergreens, spireas with pukey pink flowers, forsythia that’s a froth of glorious gold for a week in spring, then a raggedy mess the rest of the year. I see these everywhere, yet there’s a barrowful of more exciting choices.
Four shrubs you should know:
Ninebark ‘Diabolo’ Physocarpus opufolius
This has become my all-time favourite shrub. Purplish-red leaves, sprays of creamy white flowers in spring, followed by scarlet seed heads. And it’s a no brainier to grow. I have three big ones in poor, dry soil in full sun, plus another in a moist, fairly shady spot and all my darling Diabolos thrive, no matter how bad winter gets. The curious bark of this shrub (which keeps peeling off, like someone with a bad case of sunburn) is often touted as the main attraction, but I barely notice that. What turns me on is that Diabolo is bushy, beautiful, unbothered by bugs and I don’t have to get the pruners out every five minutes for it to look good.
Kirlilow Indigo Indigofera kirilowii
Fairly new on the scene from Asia, is this about to be the next hottie shrub? I think so. A bushy spreader, it grows about 3-feet high, churns out spectacular rose-coloured flowers in spring, and is, according to Sandra Pella, Toronto Botanical Garden horticulturist, “so easy you don’t have to do a thing to it.” To see comely Kirilow in action, drop by the TBG next May. One caution: it’s hardy only to Zone 5/6 (and thus, too bad, won’t survive at my home northwest of Toronto.)
Newfie Mock Orange: Philadelphus
Strictly speaking, the name is Starbright Mock Orange, but as it was hybridized on the Rock (at Memorial University), let’s tout the Newfie connection, folks. This shrub gets a thumbs up from me because mine (acquired last year from Loblaws) came through the past winter with flying colours. The flowers are larger than those on most mock orange varieties. They also smell nice, but don’t, alas, last long, although the shrub itself is a toughie. And how heartwarming that it’s ours — and not developed somewhere like California.
