Pet of the Week: Aug. 7

This week's featured pet looking for a new home is Hank, a 5-year-old Jack Russell terrier mix at the NHSPCA in Stratham.

Hank is neutered, microchipped and up-to-date on all of his shots. Hank is at the NHSPCA because he was not good with the older dog in his previous household.

He is a timid guy, prefers to ignore other dogs, has been OK with cats here, and would do best in a quieter household. He seems to bond quickly and will need some help building his confidence at home.

A nice, quiet little guy, Hank adores playing in the water and loves to splash away in the NHSPCA doggie pools on hot days. Stop by and visit with Hank today!

What Causes Jack Russell Barking Behaviour?

Like many dogs, the Jack Russell is quite vocal through his barking. However, this breed seems to like it infinitely more than many others, so just why do they do it? A common theory is that their breeding as hunting dogs has made barking a permanent part of their nature. During their time as hunting dogs they would run far ahead to sniff out the prey and barking was how they relayed information as to which direction the prey was headed. Without this special trait, they would not have been effective hunting companions, so their barking tendencies are an important part of their nature.

Between this natural predisposition and their somewhat confrontational personality, prospective Jack Russell owners should prepare themselves for barking. He’ll often bark when other people or dogs enter the home, or even when he’s approached by strangers on the street – they’re stepping onto his territory and he’s very protective of everything (and everyone) in it. Typically Jacks also bark when they feel bored, frustrated, lonely, playful, or are chasing something.

Drawback To Instinct

There’s no denying that barking is in their nature, but that simple truth doesn’t stop the fact that it can be incredibly annoying. Uncontrolled yapping is unpleasant for anyone with hearing distance and must be addressed before it becomes a permanent problem. As this is sometimes a symptom of aggression and domination, such behavior cannot be tolerated and owners must establish themselves as masters of their domains.

Preventing Your Jack Russell From Barking

Thankfully, there are things you can do to curb your Jack’s barking problems. You may not have a totally quiet dog (and why would you want to?), but you can certainly stop him from barking inappropriately and excessively. With the right amount of patience, training, and consistency you’ll be free to leave your home without a cacophony of barking.

Begin with positive reinforcement; reward all his good behavior and completely ignore anything negative. Jacks tend to think that by barking they can always win your attention, but ignoring them will prove otherwise. Instead, praise him when he stops barking and illustrate that an absence of barking will yield positive results—even though it’s hard to ignore constant barking, this method is one of the most effective.
