Pet returns home after 3 months on the lam

The breeder warned that Battenschlags Tonka was a runner.

What they did not know their newly adopted airedale also had a talent for opening doors.

"We thought it was impossible that he can not leave, our house is large with a wrought iron fence," said Rob Battenschlag. "Then I opened the door one day to get paper, and it brought out the storm door."

They had the dog for less than two weeks. It was April 19th and it started to snow.

"We tracked him for six to eight hours, but we could not find it," said Battelschlag."Neighbours, everybody was looking for him, but nobody could find it. We knew he would not know how to return. "

His wife, Lucinda Battenschlag, Tonka seen a few days later at the Peter Yegen Golf Course, not far from their homes in the West End.

"I chased him for hours and even had animal control come out and try to help," said Lucinda Battenschlag.

It was no use. Tonka they thought was gone for good, if they adopted two puppies airedale, one of which is the daughter of Tonka.

Tonka, a native of Powell, Wyoming, was a breeding male for a breeder. The Battenschlags adopted it after the coach decided to remove it. It was adopted to help fill the void for the other couple's dog, Daisy, who lost her partner of seven years of litter in March.

Little did the Battenschlags know, Tonka was alive and well. The dog continued to run to Laurel, and was seen again a month later on ranches and a gravel pit north of Laurel.

"The course lasted for miles," said Rob Battenschlag. "He could be anywhere in the ravines and nooks and crannies."

After talking to all farmers in the area, begging them not to shoot the dog, all Battenschlags could do was wait. Lucinda Battenschlag out every morning to leave food for their lost dog.

Finally, the couple sought help from the Humane Society of Montana, who helped set up five traps around the field.

A few weeks later, Lucinda Battenschlag knew the day had finally come. To his surprise, after seeing four empty traps, there was Tonka, wagging his tail into the trap of the fifth.

"It's a miracle that the dog survived," said Rob Battenschlag. "With snow, tornadoes and severe weather. He also had scabs around her neck, probably fighting with things just to survive. "

Since his return, the Battenschlags have purchased a GPS collar, and watch at the door.

Dog Collars, Nostalgia and New Beginnings « No Dog About It Blog

I was so excited when I opened the mailbox today. Inside was a bit padded brown envelope. "Could it be?" I thought. I could not wait to find out. There was no waiting until I get inside to open my package. Oh no! I tore open the package here and now.

"Yay! They're here! They're here!"

The interior of this small brown package were two items that I had been waiting for - Daisy and Jasper collars new dog, a special gift from our friend Karen Doggie elegant. I was delighted. I could not wait to try them on Daisy and Jasper.Jasper had the same dog collar since I encouraged him (about two and a half years ago!) And the neck of Daisy (the one I bought her almost 3 years) started to look tired and old. Yet, I resisted buying them new. Why? Because I'm a bit nostalgic about them. Not because they had a special meaning when I bought them or had some special significance because of their color or style, but because I'm kind of guard dog collars. When I say goodbye to one of my dogs and send them on this rainbow bridge, I keep their collars as a way to remember. Each necklace is a lot of memories for me - the day they came to live with me the day we played in the park or cuddling on the couch and made a trip to visit a friend. All my memories are wrapped up in this little necklace.

So when Karen offered to send new collars I was a bit of principle, despite the fact that they really need some new ones. Could I give up their old and put on some new ones?

Then it occurred to me that it was matter of perspective. These new collars could be even more special and more meaningful than Daisy and Jasper were now - if I chose to watch them with a new perspective.

These collars were from someone I respect a lot. Someone who is intelligent, kind, humorous, and generous to a fault. Do not believe me? Just check out what she did for Edie Jarolim and his dog, Frankie. Or the new necklaces she sent to our fellow blogger and friends in Denmark, Leo, Kenzo and Viva, and recognize them for their work in the fight against Breed Specific Legislation (BSL).(Did you know Denmark bans and kills up to 13 breeds of dogs right now?)

That's why I was so excited when Karen arrived gift. These collars will be a new beginning, but they also come with memories attached to them already, because they are a gift from a friend. This is the news that I will set my memories, those I will watch not only with memories of my dogs, but the memories of the person who gave them. What could be more special than that?
