Movie shuts down Mystic production

UPDATED: Connecticut Light and Power spokesman Mitch Gross said Friday that power has been restored to the Ramada Inn in Mystic after representatives from Whitehall LLC, which owns the hotel, paid in person at CL&P headquarters in Berlin.

Power reportedly went back on Friday afternoon at around 3:30 p.m.

Gross could not disclose the amount owed by the hotel's owners, but he said the bill was paid in full, and was worth "five figures."

STONINGTON — The local zombies are now homeless.

A cinematic adaptation of “Remains,” a Steven Niles graphic novel, is out in the cold and in the dark after the filming location, the Mystic Ramada Inn, abruptly closed. Connecticut Light & Power shut off the electricity on Thursday.

“It’s a horrible situation,” said First Selectman Edward Haberek Jr. “They’re pretty upset about it.”

Haberek said he received a frantic call from production personnel Thursday morning because the power had been shut off at the hotel and they were forced to leave. Synthetic Cinema, the company making the movie, had turned a portion of the hotel into a postapocalyptic Reno casino, where the only non-zombie survivors are a blackjack dealer and an exotic dancer.

All indoor shooting was to take place inside the hotel, with outdoor scenes filmed in Norwich. The movie company had reportedly paid the hotel two-thirds of the rental fee in advance, according to Haberek.

The first selectman attempted to contact the hotel’s owners, he said, but was unsuccessful.
