The mosquito's worst enemy in southern Stanislaus County is calling it quits in the fall.

Jerry Davis will retire in October after more than 24 years as general manager of the Turlock Mosquito Abatement District.

The special district responsible for keeping mosquitoes at bay worked behind the scenes until the arrival of West Nile virus eight years ago. Davis was pushed to the forefront of interagency campaigns to protect the public against the potentially deadly illness.

SYMPTOMS

About one in five people infected will have fever, body aches, nausea, vomiting or swollen lymph glands, lasting a few days to several weeks. One in 150 of those infected suffer a debilitating attack, with fever, neck stiffness, disorientation, severe weakness, tremors, coma and paralysis. This form of the illness can be fatal or cause long-term neurological effects.

HEALTH CARE ADVICE

Use insect repellent with DEET when outdoors; wear long sleeves and long pants. Avoid being outdoors at dawn and dusk, when mosquitoes are most likely to bite. Put screens on windows and doors. Empty standing water (in flower pots, buckets, empty tires, barrels or rain gutters). Change water regularly in pet dishes and birdbaths. Keep wading pools empty and on their sides when not in use. Report unusually high numbers of mosquitoes, as well as dead birds.

The Turlock-based district is responsible for mosquito abatement in areas south of the Tuolumne River and west of the San Joaquin River.

"I originally thought (West Nile) would be here for a year or two, and then it would go away," Davis said last week. "But that was not the case. It is here to stay."

Testing of mosquito samples began earlier this month and the results were negative, he said.

The mosquito populations are above the five-year average with the spring rains and rivers running high with Sierra runoff. The recent rise in temperatures has made the insects more active, increasing the chances of transmitting the virus to people, Davis said.

But they persistently keep popping out, the least bit when I really couldn’t care, which consequently got me listening to a couple of their tracks. And just by listening to them, I knew that I didn’t have to see the band for myself to know that these guys have a lot of spunk and attitude (the kind that can get on my nerves). But, of course lead singer, Tom Clarke is only 18, probably 19 now, years of age, so that summed up everything. God, bands are getting younger and younger by the day aren’t they? Or maybe it’s just me who’s getting old.
