Several thousand turn out for Portuguese Festival parade today

NEWARK — Near the intersection of Ferry and Merchant streets in Newark today, 11 men on horseback waited to join the Portuguese Parade.

Mounted on the tallest horse, a spotted brown and white Appaloosa named Cash, Tony De Carvalho, of Elizabeth, held the reins loosely and chatted with the men around him.

"The horse? Well, it’s in my blood," he said.

De Carvalho, grandson of a Brazilian rancher, rides in the parade nearly every year. Today, his son rode with him, and his grandson rode behind them in a red wagon drawn by sleek, brown Belgian work horses.

"Anyways, it’s better than traveling by car," De Carvalho, clad in a red shirt and a wide cowboy hat, said.

Several thousand people turned out for the parade today and for the 32nd Portuguese Festival that began Saturday in the city’s Ironbound. Up and down Ferry Street, vendors peddled small Brazilian flags, soccer jerseys — yellow and green for Brazil, maroon and green for Portugal — and t-shirts emblazoned with a shirtless Cristiano Reynaldo, Portugal’s soccer superstar.

Many came dressed in their country’s colors. One boy tied a Portuguese flag around his neck as a cape and would throw his arms in the air and dart forward, like a comic-book Superman.

Many of the festivalgoers and those in the parade had a family connection to Portugal or Brazil, a former Portuguese colony.

Ahead of the horsemen, Nancy Silva, of Springfield, guided a group of women in floral dresses and white stockings and men in black vests and wide-brimmed hats. She said she marched in her first parade at 4, dressed in the ancient wedding costume of her parent’s native Portugal.

"It can get hot for the ladies," she said, hiking up her skirt to show layers of petticoats. "But it’s only a once a year thing."

Watching was Renato and Maria Baptista. As they crossed Ferry Street earlier, Maria Baptista, inspired by the music from a live band, twirled in the street.

The Brazilian couple walks from their Ironbound home each year to see the parade. Even with their children grown, they avoided moving away.

"This is the hub for Brazilian culture, for Portuguese culture." Renato Baptista said. "I wouldn’t chose to live anywhere else."

Why was a picture showing non-Europeans and mestizos waving Portuguese flags chosen as the lead image for the article?

Only one person in that photograph could possibly be ethnically Portuguese.

On the day of the game, the children ate lunch with student volunteer “Buddies” and chaperones. The Dean of Students Office put together goody bags for each child and sponsored a tailgate lunch. Alpha Lambda Delta Freshmen Honor Society provided free T-shirts commemorating the event, and the Department of Athletics provided participants with complimentary tickets at the 50-yard line. After the game, kids met with players, cheerleaders and Red Hots for autographs and photos. The clean-up culminated a month of Greek Life’s generous service to the university and national philanthropies. Kappa Sigma hosted events to support the American Cancer Society, Alpha Delta Pi held Diamonds in the Dugout softball tournament to benefit the Ronald McDonald House, and Kappa Delta hosted the 17th annual Shamrock Flag Football Tournament to support child abuse prevention efforts. The Office of Volunteer Services and Parent Programs opened the pantry doors in late October to provide students with a range of canned and boxed food items. Pantry Co-Coordinator Monique Byrd said the pantry, which has served more than 60 students, is an opportunity for the university community to lend a hand to students eager to attain an education, yet laboring to nourish their bodies. Valdosta State University welcomes virtual visitors to a 3-D interactive website the university launched in March. VSU’s Virtual Campus Experience features an interactive map that allows users to view the entire campus, as well as watch videos to learn more about the academic programs and activities housed in each building. The website also includes a series of informative videos featuring academics, athletics, student life and a community overview.
