Who's Your Daddy? DNA test kits can answer questions about dog lineage

“George is a 100-pound dog that looks all chocolate Lab, but I always knew something else was in him,” McGregory said. “The poodle and Yorkie surprised me — it’s crazy.”

Friends Forever Humane Society (FFHS) is now selling DNA kits that can help local pet owners identify the different breeds that make up their dog’s lineage.

Making Science Work

Dog DNA profiles are generated with the same technology used by law enforcement agencies throughout the world. How does this work? In humans and dogs alike, each gene is present as two copies. One copy represents the parent, the other the child, or in this case, the dog.

DNA sequences are passed from a parent. Similar markers make a match. Now such testing is going to the dogs. It is called DNA Breed Identification. The test is designed for the sole purpose of identifying breeds found in the genetic composition of mixed breed dogs. The matches are made from specific breeds in the database. To test the dog, a simple swab is used, just like on television.

It is important to understand that each dog is uniquely individual. Two dogs with the same breeds detected in their DNA may exhibit drastically different physical traits. While certain traits may generally be associated with specific breeds, behavior will still be influenced by environment, training, and handling.

Like in McGregory’s case with her dog George, the breeds described in the analysis may not necessarily be evident in the dog. McGregory said George’s traits do make sense to her now that she knows the specific breeds that are in his DNA makeup.

Reasons For Program

Carol Falconer, shelter manager at FFHS, said the shelter is now selling these DNA test kits for $59.99. She said the reason she feels the need to have these kits on hand is the technology is there and one of the most frequently asked questions by people adopting a dog is, “What are they?”

“Those of us that work with dogs are pretty good at trying to access the different types of breeds in the dogs we see, but we have found out many hidden breeds can answer a lot of questions,” Falconer said. “What we do is make an educated guess.
