Wasabi signs global deal to sell Kalina Cycle technology into cement industry
Environmental technologies business Wasabi Energy (LON: WAS, ASX: WAS) has teamed up with Denmark’s FLSmidth in order to step up sales of Wasabi’s Kalina Cycle waste heat recovery process to the cement industry.
FLSmidth, a leading provider of equipment and plant to the global cement industry, has paid Wasabi an upfront fee to secure exclusive access to the Kalina Cycle technology for sale into the worldwide cement and lime manufacturing industry. The two firms previously signed a deal in January to build an 8.6 megawatt Kalina Cycle power plant at the Khairpur Cement Plant in Pakistan.
Wasabi believes its Kalina Cycle engine has substantial advantages over conventional thermal power engines. The firm claims that the Kalina engine can produce up to 50 percent more power generation from the same heat input (working particularly well at temperatures below 200 degrees centigrade), making it an ideal solution for generating useful energy from waste heat.
Wasabi and FLSmidth believe the technology is particularly well suited to the typical heat sources available in a cement plant, with the Kalina engine recovering waste heat from cement process gas streams – specifically preheater and clinker cooler exhaust gases.
Wasabi estimates that the integration of the Kalina Cycle technology into a cement plant in a waste heat recovery configuration has the potential to reduce overall power consumption by between 10 and 20 percent. On this basis, the firm said, the technology has the potential to reduce power consumption in the global cement industry by up to 9,132MW, equivalent to taking more that 7.3 million cars off the road.
“We recognise there are significant synergies between our patented technology and the core capabilities of FLSmidth and are delighted to be expanding our collaboration with FLSmidth beyond the Khairpur Kalina Cycle project, to cover the global cement and lime manufacturing industry,” said John Byrne, Wasabi’s executive chairman. “FLSmidth is the largest EPC [engineering, procurement and construction] provider to the global cement industry and have installed more than 2,000 cement kilns throughout their 129 year history.”

I just sold one of 0842 condensing units this wk. The unit is going to need 3/4 gas line and water lines. Make sure your gas meter is large enough to handle load. If not you will need to call your local gas company to upgrade meter. The 0842 uses exhaust heat and a secondary heat exchanger to heat water. Non condensing models dont use exhaust heat, they only use 1 standard heat exchanger thus exhaust heat is not applied to heating water but blown away from the unit with exhaust gases.
While I get the point of the vid, I really wish I could see some info to home owners on proper installations, such as gas line sizing and the importance of a softener. When customers see that from the factory it helps the installers with the sale. Anyhow, good start (u forgot to mention the difference between the 7 series and 8 series with respect to btu load and GPM delivery.
