How to Find a Hood to Coast team

. Perhaps you've just discovered that you are unexpectedly free during the last weekend of August, or you've recently discovered a new love of running and you are ready to take on your first Hood to Coast.  You might even be in the saddest of Hood to Coast situations - a long time veteran whose team didn't make the cut this year.  Whatever the reason, if you are looking for a 2011 Hood to Coast team for the 30th annual running of the popular overnight relay, we've got some tips and resources to help you get hooked up with a team who needs your help. Here's the thing with getting on a Hood to Coast team; if you are willing to be patient and be a last minute replacement, your odds of getting on a team increase dramatically.  A couple of months before the race, teams are still pretty casual about filling their team.  They will be selective. Two weeks before, they are ready to take anyone who can has running experience.  A couple of days before, and you need only be able to breathe.  Barely.  Be patient, and keep your ears open. .  Teams post their need for runners, but you can also post your own resume so that teams will contact you as they need replacement runners. Be sure to be upfront about your estimated 10k pace and your expectations of your team; if you are a competitive runner who will not be satisfied with a team out there to enjoy the day, it's better to let them know beforehand. You will be amazed by how many of your acquaintances have friends who run the relay.  By putting your desire to run in the minds of so many people, you will greatly increase your chances of being picked up along the way.  Living in Portland, it seems that this relay touches the lives of everyone.  It's amazing, really, so use that power to your advantage and get the word out there that you will run. .  Start connecting with people who are running.  You never know where a connection might lead.  I've been invited onto several relay teams through people I have connected with on Twitter.  Facebook is another place that you can post that you are looking for a Hood to Coast team.  You can also check out the local running clubs and store sites; people will often post their need for runners on their message boards as the event draws close.  I have also seen posts on Craiglist in the Events section as the race date approaches.
