Retirees, club bikers among diverse crowd at Americade

They found their bike and gear soaked, but free of hail damage, on their return.LAKE GEORGE - From hardcore enthusiasts who identify as bikers to well-heeled professionals who don their leather chaps once a year, motorcycle riders of all shapes and sizes can be seen at Americade.
Lake George's largest annual event casts a wide net, marketing Americade as a rally open to anyone interested in motorcycles, from those on high-rev sport bikes to others straddling chrome-embossed American muscle.
And as a result, it's a common to see Honda Goldwing-riding, clean-shaven doctors rubbing shoulders and talking bikes with grizzled, and often bearded, veterans of the Harley-Davidson culture.
Dr. David Moore dismounted his three-wheeled Goldwing at the peak of Wednesday's sweltering heat. He was clad in a red Goldwing shirt and a Goldwing leather belt.
"I'm a fair-weather rider," said the retired orthopedic surgeon from Framingham, Mass. "My wife and I are all about the touring, and the Goldwing is comfortable."
The Moores are two of thousands of high-dollar Honda Goldwing riders at the event, designed for comfort over speed. Parked next to them sits a row of sport bikes bearing maker's marks of companies including Kawasaki, BMW and Suzuki, driven by a group of young, tattooed men.
"I stick to the sport-touring bikes," said Ken Martin, a science teacher from Bristol, Vt. "I like the speed."
Only a few meters away, a group of burly, leather-clad men stood in a circle around a cluster of soft-tail Harleys. Each wore a vest, dominated with a massive patch across the back proclaiming "Red Knights."
With names like the Boozefighters, the Jury, the Leathernecks and a nationwide group of policemen called the Blue Knights, motorcycle clubs often represent a confluence of patriotism, politics and tradition.
Most motorcycle clubs trace their roots to post-war California, where disenchanted veterans who learned to ride motorcycles in Europe, flush the cash, took to the roads on motorcycles.
Motorcycle club culture has evolved into a complex hierarchical structure, complete with elected leadership positions, modified Robert's Rule of Order and democratic voting systems.
