THE community is being urged to back a fundraising drive which will hopefully see Christmas lights return to the streets of Haddington in December.

A sub-committee of Haddington Community Council (HCC), set up to organise future festive displays, needs to raise up to £30,000 to install decorations on town centre streets following last year's blackout.

HCC pulled the plug on last year's High Street festive lights due to health and safety issues and concerns that organising the display was too much of a burden on the group's volunteers.

Among the plans for Christmas this year is the installation of Victorian-style street lamps on High Street.

The lamps, which may be semi-permanent and put up at certain points throughout the year, would not have their own permanent lights but would be used for hanging Christmas lights, banners and bunting.

Planning permission must first be sought, and Haddington Community Council has agreed to fund six of the lamps at a cost of about £1,500 each. It's thought that up to £30,000 could be needed over the next few years to pay for the lamps, as well as lights for High Street, for trees on Court Street and for Christmas trees at the Town House and the Corn Exchange.

A group of traders and members of the public will take part in a sponsored walk on August 13 - taking in a 13.1-mile route around the county, including Pencaitland, Gifford and Garvald. Sponsorship forms are available from Pat Lemmon at the Toy Box on High Street, and more people from different community groups are needed to take part.

Before then, a race night will take place at Haddington Bowling Club on July 2. Tickets cost £1 and are available from the Toy Box and the Bead Shop on Court Street. Race horses can be sponsored for £5.

And later this year, a community calendar will be released featuring photos of various community groups doing things you may not expect - all to raise money for the festive period.

Jan Wilson, chair of HCC, encouraged the public to support the events. "This is in response to not having the lights last year and the town just looked dead," she said. "In the winter months, they make it nice and cheery and give the town a Christmassy atmosphere."

The first year we lived here, I woke up one morning with a man peering through my bedroom window as he attached electrical wire to my flat. Pardon me for being picky, but if someone is hooking up my home to something that runs off the mains, I want to see the safety certificate and insurance info!
