"Extreme Makeover Home Edition" Family Mourns Loss of Son
SOUTHWICK, Mass. (WGGB) -- A family thrust into the limelight after receiving a new home from a hit ABC show is now grieving the loss of one of their children, after he apparently drowned in Southwick.
It all began early Sunday morning. Just before 1:00 a.m., police were called to the Congamond Lakes for a report of a person in the water. Southwick Police told abc40 and FOX 6's Mike LaCrosse Sunday that the person was onboard a boat with people leaving a bar heading toward Connecticut when some went in for a swim.
Southwick resident Roderick Campbell heard all the commotion from shore. "It was a loud cry for help," Campbell told LaCrosse Sunday morning.
Southwick Police and Mass. Environmental Police combed the waters for most of the day Sunday with no sign of the victim. Southwick Police Officer Thomas Krutka described the scene Sunday to LaCrosse. "It's now a recovery mission," Krutka said.
The search was suspended late Sunday, but resumed Monday morning. Around 12:30 p.m., they found a body in the Middle Pond of the Congamond Lakes.
Southwick Police are withholding the victim's name until it can be positively identified. However, family and friends say the victim is 22-year-old Larry Cauley of Suffield, Conn.
Cauley was one of over a dozen children being cared for by Catherine and William Hill of Suffield.
In June 2009, the Hill family was chosen to receive a new home from the crew at ABC's "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition." With the help of thousands of volunteers, they demolished their fire damaged 2,200 square foot ranch and built a brand new 3,400 square foot two-story house on the same plot of land.

Things are getting extreme for a York County family. Extreme Makeover: Home Edition is in the midstate this week renovating the Keefer family's home.
One of the couple's four sons, Brian, was paralyzed from the neck down in a gymnastics accident a few years ago. He will be getting a home custom built to his special needs.
Monday meant demolition for the Extreme Makeover crew and the Keefer's new home. Of course, it's all made possible by volunteers. Organizers expect 3,000 to 5,000 volunteers working on the build.
"I just wanted to volunteer, help out the family," said Justin Beachy of Carlisle. "I actually know the family, so I wanted to get involved and do what I can to help with this process."
Monday was a fun day for volunteers, who played the part of college partiers. Some wore togas as scenes were shot prior to demolition.
"We were in the building tearing down a roof," said Lauren Homko. "We had people who were carrying them with our hands, we threw a toilet out the window, we all got to stand around for that. Basically, we are stripping down the house and helping volunteer."
Crews and volunteers will be working 24 hours a day until the house is complete on Sunday.
