Louisiana College student to teach English, spread God's word in China
PINEVILLE -- Candice Carr of Pineville is going to China this week to teach English to Chinese students over the next couple of months, but the real reason is to spread the word of God.
Carr, a senior biblical studies major at Louisiana College, said she will intern with "Horizon English" to teach English language to residents of Hainan, China.
Carr will work in four programs: younger Chinese students program, high school Chinese students program, college exchange program and adult program.
"'Horizon English' is a group that is working in China to teach students and adults English," Carr said. "I will be staying with an exchange family. I'm trying to brush up on my Chinese language now. I know how to say pizza, hair and chocolate in Chinese."
Carr is an international missionary, and she said the opportunity to go to China is a blessing.
She has been on mission trips to Belo Horizonte, Brazil; Managua, Nicaragua; and Taipei City, Taiwan.
She had plans to go to Belo Horizonte for a two-week humanitarian mission trip beginning July 7, when the opportunity for the China trip came up.
"I speak a lot of Portuguese and was to be in a medical group to help in Brazil," Carr said. "I've always been strong in my faith and God. I use the trips to spread the word of God and talk about God's love."
Randall E. Esters, LC dean of education, approached her on May 15 and asked if she wanted to go to China, she said.
"I was thinking: 'Who doesn't want to go to China?'," Carr said. "I was like, 'Yes, I want to go to China.' Dr. Esters said he was ready to purchase my plane ticket. I was like, 'You serious?'
"He said yes and would email me details about the trip. If Dr. Esters popped in to pay for a trip, I was expecting it to be a mission trip."
Carr is a lifeguard with the 4-H camp at Camp Grant Walker in Pollock, but she said she had no trouble finding someone to replace her as a lifeguard,
"I'm not going to lie; I've been scrambling a little bit to get things I need for the trip," Carr said. "We will write lessons plans. I will bring DVDs of 'Kidz Bop' music to help me. I will be able to teach American songs and dance."
"I also want to show them how to make friendship bracelets."
Laurie Carr, Candice's mother, said her daughter has been spreading the word of God since the age of 4.
"Candice is a member of Philadelphia Baptist Church in Deville and definitely practices what she preaches," Laurie Carr said. "She's strong in her faith. More young adults need to be involved in spreading God's words.
