Arthritis sufferer robs bank for $1 to obtain free prison health care

"I didn't have any fears," said Mr Verone, who did not use a weapon in the incident. "I told the teller that I would sit over here and wait for police." Mr Verone disclosed that prior to his robbery he sold and donated all of his furniture, allowed the lease on his home to expire and moved into a motel.

The 59-year-old has said he will defend himself in court and threaten "the crime will happen again" if he does not receive a long enough prison sentence.

Sen. Debbie Clary to retire from the N.C. Senate - Sources - The ...

After nearly two decades of elected service in the North Carolina General Assembly, Sen. Debbie Clary says it’s time to move on.

Clary announced her retirement Monday from the state Senate, effective in November.

“I’ve served for 17 years, and it’s time to give someone else the opportunity,” Clary said Monday.

Clary’s retirement leaves her seat in Senate District 46 vacant, meaning the Republican parties of Cleveland and Rutherford counties will appoint a replacement.

During her tenure as a state representative and senator, Clary said she enjoyed working on legislation involving health care and independence for seniors, laws to protect children like graduated driver’s licenses and Jessica’s Law, as well as economic development issues.

Clary will continue her involvement in public policy after retirement by working as a lobbyist in Raleigh, she said.

She called serving her constituents in four counties an “honor” and advised her successor to take his or her role as an elected official seriously.

“It’s not a position,” she said. “It’s a job.”

Rep. Tim Moore, R-Cleveland, has worked with Clary since he was elected to the House in 2002.

"I've enjoyed working with Debbie these past 8 years that I've been in the General Assembly …  She has done a lot of work for Cleveland County and Rutherford County," Moore said. "She's one of the hardest working people in Raleigh, and she will be missed greatly when she retires."

Wayne King, Kings Mountain resident and NC Republican party’s vice chair, said Cleveland County residents will feel Clary’s absence no matter who takes her place. “Debbie championed for elderly services in North Carolina,” King said. “It’s her commitment to make North Carolina a better place.”

King said he ran Clary’s campaign from 1998 to 2006. “She’s run some very aggressive campaigns and never lost,” King said.

Who could take Clary’s seat?

“I may be interested in that,” King said. “I’m not ruling out anything at this point.”

Others interested in running will probably come forward once the full redistricting maps are released.

“(Cleveland County) will be paired with someone, Lincoln, Burke or Rutherford,” King said.
