Look out: 'Drive Angry' has something to offend almost everyone

THE LAST COUPLE of years have been tough for Oscar winner Nicolas Cage. In April he was arrested in New Orleans for suspicion of domestic battery, disturbing the peace, and public intoxication. In 2009 the IRS was on his tail for more than six-million-dollars in unpaid taxes. The actor, who at one time owned 15 personal residences, three of which were castles, two islands in the Bahamas, jets, yachts and a fleet of 50 cars, had been spending beyond his means for years. It was reported that he outbid Leonardo DiCaprio for a 67-million-year-old dinosaur skull, for which he paid $276,000.

The actor's spending habits have resulted in a string of embarrassing cash-grab films like “Bangkok Dangerous,” “Season of the Witch” and “The Wicker Man.” These stinkers have left a stain on his filmography even though he has been impressive in recent efforts like “Knowing,” “Kick-Ass, and “Bad Lieutenant.”

His most recent cash cow, “Drive Angry,” is one of the worst he’s ever been associated with and, at this point, that’s really saying something. Director Patrick Lussier, who helmed the abysmal “Dracula 2000” and “My Bloody Valentine 3D,” cast Cage as Milton, an escapee from Hell who is trying to save his infant granddaughter from a Satantic cult. Shot in 3-D, “Angry” is one of the worst films to come out of a major studio in years. It’s so poorly directed, acted and scripted, it has to be seen to be believed.

If there’s anything good about this Blu-ray it’s got to be the high-def video and supercharged DTS-HD soundtrack. I’d go so far to call the HD imagery reference quality, which I guess bad films deserve just as much as the good ones. Colors are vibrant, flesh tones are accurate, and detail is eye-catching. The uncompressed sound is extremely aggressive like the movie itself. It’s loud, it’s in your face, and offers nothing in the way of subtly.

Extras are slim and include a commentary with Lussier and writer/actor Todd Farmer, a handful of HD deleted scenes, and the before-mentioned Bonus View which tallies the film’s ridiculous body count and interviews with the cast and crew.

This one’s an abomination.
