Like father, like son, like son

After a grueling two years of juggling a bank job, classes at three campuses in a single day and a marriage he’d had since graduating from high school, Jerry David found his place in life — in Jerry Lee’s footsteps.  First, at Oktaha High School on the boys side of the gym and then, two years later, at the school he’s been at for 20 years, 16 as the Fort Gibson girls coach. Jerry David has two sons who have ventured in that direction. David is now an assistant coach at Harding University in Searcy, Ark.  But Jeff has gone exactly in the direction of his father and grandfather, making it a  three-generation branch  of girls basketball coaches. A fourth generation belonging to Jerry Lee’s wife, Noveta Cargill Walker. Jerry Lee played basketball at Fort Gibson, as his kids and grandkids would, then later at Northeastern State. He got the school’s first state tournament appearance, coming on the boys side and resulting in a quarterfinal loss to Mangum, in his final season. He left coaching but returned in an interim capacity in 1984, coaching a pair of nieces in the process and led that squad to the first winning season in the history of the program. “I’d watched a lot of coaches coach their kid and I always thought one of the reasons I didn’t want to coach him was that I would hold him to a much higher standard,” Jerry Lee said.  “I think it makes them a better player but man, whenever you come home and you’re having basketball for supper, then breakfast and everything else, I didn’t think that was going to be a good situation. “He’d let me wear him out in horse (a popular shooting skills game) at the end of practice then wear me out when I got to thinking I was pretty good.  He’s work with me up there on weekends on my shot. I wish Dad would’ve stayed and coached me but I wouldn’t have been the player I was had he not worked with me.” “I kid him and tell him you’ve really never coached basketball yet, and the reason I say that is because he’s never had a losing season,” Jerry Lee said. “But he’s earned that spot. He understands the game, studies the game, has a great rapport with his kids to the point that I’m not sure they’d play for another coach.
