While Grade 12 girls at Grimsby Secondary School can rest assured they won’t be someone’s twin at this year’s prom thanks to social networking site Facebook, where each girl has posted their dress, Heather Beaman can sleep easy knowing she will be the only girl in the world sporting the short, blue and pink frock she chose. That’s because Beaman, 17, sewed her own dress. Beaman is putting the finishing touches on her colourful ensemble. With a turqouise bodice and a rainbow of layered crystal organza for a skirt, Beaman will be stunning at this year’s prom. Work started in January after Beaman found a few dresses she liked in a magazine. With photos in hand, she headed to European Textiles for fabric. She lucked out, spending only $50 on material. Diemert said students usually spend around $100 on fabric. Boers, a Senator Gibson student, spent hours on intricate, handmade flowers which flow over the left side of her one-shouldered blue dress. Boers, who has wanted to be a fashion designer for as long as she can remember, drew inspiration from dresses she had seen online but the dress she will wear to her Grade 8 graduation is one that she designed on her own. Diemert is self-taught, using her mother’s sewing machine to experiment at a young age. When it came time to start a family, Diemert knew she wanted to work from home. She started as a seamstress making custom items ranging from wedding gowns to costumes for a 6’10 wrestler. When the opportunity to share her skills with others presented herself, she jumped at it and hasn’t looked back.
