Bettendorf resident receives state honor
Larry Makoben, Bettendorf Park Board vice chairman, was honored with the Claude Ahrens Community Service Award.
The award, presented by the Iowa Parks and Recreation Association, recognizes a person outside the parks and recreation profession who has contributed to the strengthening of programs in their community, state and beyond.
Makoben has volunteered thousands of hours of his time to enhance the quality of life for residents of Bettendorf. In addition to serving on the Park Board for the past 12 years, he has been involved in the Bettendorf Chamber, Optimists and Jaycees clubs, and has served as president of chairman for each of those groups. He has served on the Bettendorf Fourth of July Committee since 1976, is a member of the Mississippi Valley Fair Board and has been a long-time Chamber of Commerce Ambassador.
He also served at the state and national levels as the Iowa Board and Commission representative for the Iowa Parks and Recreation Association.
