Today's letters: Let's address the root causes of Vancouver riot

Many of the 100,000 people who watched the game on big screens in the city’s downtown probably can’t afford a home there. My children had to move away from Vancouver to own their own homes. Meanwhile, financial institutions push mortgages like crazy. At the same time, planeloads of investors from Mainland China are buying downtown Vancouver properties that regular Canadians can’t afford. So we have a disenfranchised class in Vancouver from a real estate perspective. Despite Shakespeare’s proven wisdom on falls from grace and Fitzgerald’s pessimistic literary challenge, tragedy can be avoided by the heroic. The good counsel of a Jack Nicklaus or Tom Watson or fellow Irishman Darren Clarke, there to advise him on proven ways of instilling dignity into one’s life as well as into the game, is a solid first step well worth the taking. Upon reading this feature article, my 21-year-old daughter said: “It could have been me, dad!” I said yes, but it wasn’t because us hippies were all on the run at the time for many different reasons, and I was not one of them making firebombs to prove my point. In my case, I was escaping conscription in the French army so I would not have to fight another useless war in Chad in 1971. I also bore a deep hatred and resentment for the system in place. I drew better in the Father’s Day genetic lottery. My dad, Martin, was born in Winnipeg in 1922, toughed out the Dirty Thirties, volunteered in 1940 to fight the Nazis who occupied Paul Kuitenbrouwer’s country, and died in 1999, after inculcating in his kids values utterly opposed to those in the weed-warped brain of Peter’s narcissistic and nihilistic father. George Jonas is mistaken if he thinks that all Israel has to offer the United States is a stable democratic ally, which means a great deal in and of itself by the way, especially in the Middle East. The two countries share much more than common values and interests. They also share technology, intelligence and assets which the United States depends upon to maintain its military presence in the Middle East. Israel is on the front line in the war against terror. It also sits on huge oil and gas deposits and is about to become a major player on the global energy scene. Israel is also arguably America’s best, most reliable, most trustworthy friend on the planet and is probably the only country that would instantaneously and unconditionally come to America’s assistance, if she was attacked.

Fresh iPhone Games for May 10: Hockey Fight Pro, King's Orders ...

Hit the ice and drop your gloves with today’s Fresh Games list, which starts the day right with Hockey Fight Pro, distilling all the violence out of the sport. Hockey Fight has you winning bouts to raise a powerful fighter, and while it is a little violent (read: maybe not for the young’uns), it’s a challenging good time as well. Get your details by reading on below, and check out a couple of other interesting offerings while you’re at it: King’s Orders: Savages, a casual game that’s both funny and addicting, and monster-fighting and digging game, Spelunk.

Hockey Fight Pro (iPhone, iPad) $0.99

Forget the hockey, this game is all about the fights -- they’re just brutal in Hockey Fight Pro, which pits you against other players in some rough knock-down drag-outs, in which you’ll use a combination of touch and gesture controls to take on opponents. Four buttons surrounding the screen control face punches, body punches and blocking, and once you connect enough combos, you can execute special punches by swiping your thumbs across the screen.

You’ll need quick reflexes to take on the players in Hockey Fight Pro, because they don’t hold anything back. You can choose from one of several fighters and improve your skills and stats as you win bouts against other players. The game also lets you take on friends using a Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connection.

King’s Orders: Savages - Chapter One (iPhone, iPad) $0.99

Outside your king’s castle are green-haired savages that will maul soldiers as soon as look at them, but your king wants to capture them. He also wants them captured unharmed, meaning the soldiers have to form a human ring around the savages so they can’t escape, while avoiding getting mauled by the monsters while the king runs off in search of a cage. Thus is the premise of King’s Orders: Savages, a high-scoring casual game you play by tilting your device to move the ring of soldiers away from the savage as it charges them, lest one get mauled and the circle of troops diminish.

There are 20 rounds of savage-catching, with each lengthening the amount of savage-avoidance time you need to get through by five seconds. The fewer soldiers killed by the crazed caged monster, the more points you earn -- but lose too many soldiers and the savage will escape, resulting in game over. King’s Orders is simple but addicting, and it’s actually a pretty humorous little game; definitely worth checking out for just a buck.
